A job offer is like an investment in your company. You can celebrate it as the ante to the game that it is, but it is just a ticket to the beginning of a next phase.
When weighing up the option you can feel the potential energy. This company is making a bet on you, hoping that their investment will return a greater value than they put in.
Earlier in my career I used to think more about myself when it came to making a job choice.
I would ask myself:
- Is this a good deal for me?
- Will it be fun?
- Will I be able to learn?
- Will it further me on my life journey?
Now-a-days though I tend to balance those important questions with:
- Is there something I can bring to the table?
- Is it possible to have an impactful leverage?
- Is this work important to the company?
- Am I aligned with the companies journey?
There are no perfect jobs, or perfect companies. I have often witnessed people who fall for the grass is greener syndrome, and I have also seen the opposite: people who are scared to leave even though they hate their situations as better the devil you know.
After having some time off after my Walmart Labs chapter, it is time to get back to it. It has been tricky working through what to do next, and making choices can take a lot of mental energy, but I am getting very excited for the next chapter.
I can feel the potential, but also feel the need to do great work. I hope I don’t let anyone down. One thing I know for sure: I will give it 100%, and I thank my family for their amazing support.
What do you think about when you consider and take a new job?
